1690 Manuscripts, illuminated Lamp
1690 Manuscripts, illuminated Lamp
A large, handbuilt terracotta lamp, decorated in white slip and sgraffito, with a wicker shade made especially for 1690 by Atelier Vime in Vallabrègues, Provence. The surface decoration depicts motifs inspired by a favourite 15th century herbal manuscript. Stylised interpretations of plants I have discovered locally, including sorrel, bracken, native orchid and spent yarrow, pattern the surface in kale greens and burnt carmine red underglaze.
Pietro Andrea Mattioli, the noted Renaissance naturalist wrote, “Whoever knew the virtues of plants would perform miracles.” It is a pertinent message for today: understanding the virtue of the natural world, the morality in it is where I think one can begin to repair. That is the point I wish to illuminate :)
