1690 Tian (Large deep bowl)

1690 Tian (Large deep bowl)

£690.00

A large terracotta bowl, decorated with white slip and sgraffito, glazed with washy colours in straw, sap and peat. The tian is a large French bowl, traditionally used to prepare duck confit. It is wonderfully wide at the mouth, the sides reduce steeply to a narrow base. The interior bowl of antique tians are glazed with solid colour and the exterior is left unglazed, utilitarian and primitive - decorated only with the clay’s flaws, dents and dings. The 1690 version is an absolute circus inside; a galloping chaos pinned down by three tiny eggs in a nest at the centre - Olive’s idea.

Additional Notes: These earthenware ceramics are fired at relatively low temperatures and are not vitrified, which means they are slightly porous and coarser than stoneware or porcelain. Occasionally, if the vessel contains liquid, moisture will form a bloom on the base. Please make sure you protect precious surfaces if you intend to display these works for long periods of time containing water. To clean, wash gently in warm soapy water by hand. Not dishwasher safe.
