1690 Duncan's Dreams Vase

1690 Duncan's Dreams Vase
Handbuilt terracotta vase with lug handles decorated in white slip and sgraffito, depicting characters inspired by a block-printed counterpane on Duncan Grant’s bed at Charleston House, in East Sussex. Indian princesses dance with sacred cows amongst flowers, while princes on horseback canter with hunting dogs; indifferent peacocks simply, meander. Subtle impressions made with antique wood blocks pool underglaze colours in old rose and dirty ochre; stylised trees in the landscape beyond are suggested in washy greens, influenced by a Mughal painting I particularly like, dated 1835. These vases are substantial and heavy, designed to counter balance long branches and heavier blooms.
Please note, I have 1 vase in stock, ready for immediate dispatch.
Dimensions: Typical Height 25cm, diameter 15cm, 19cm at widest point including lug handles
Additional Notes: These earthenware ceramics are fired at relatively low temperatures and are not vitrified, which means they are slightly more porous than stoneware or porcelain which are fired at higher temperatures. Occasionally, if the vessel contains liquid, moisture will form a bloom on the base. Please make sure you protect precious surfaces if you intend to display these works for long periods of time containing water, or use a water tight liner. To clean, wash gently in warm soapy water by hand. Not dishwasher safe.
