1690 Duncan's Dreams Charger

1690 Duncan's Dreams Charger
Handbuilt terracotta charger with lug handles based on a traditional gypsy skillet, decorated in white slip and sgraffito, depicting characters inspired by a block-printed counterpane on Duncan Grant’s bed at Charleston House, in East Sussex. Indian princesses dance with sacred cows amongst flowers, while princes on horseback canter with hunting dogs; indifferent peacocks simply, meander. Subtle impressions made with antique wood blocks pool underglaze colours in old rose and dirty ochre; stylised trees on the horizon which disappear into the centre of the piece are suggested in washy greens, influenced by a Mughal painting I particularly like, dated 1835.
