The tian is a large French bowl, traditionally used to prepare duck confit. It is wonderfully wide at the mouth, the sides reduce steeply to a narrow base. The interior of these terracotta bowls are decorated with white slip and sgraffito, depicting motifs inspired by early 19th century European ceramics, including delft, faience and frakturs, glazed with washy colours in muddy greens, berry stain reds and pale, watery pinks. The acorn in relief is pressed from antique French chocolate mould.
