£490.00

A handbuilt terracotta vase, decorated with white slip and subtle impressions inspired by Alma, the doggy who presides over the goings-on at the venerable Atelier Vime in Provence. The surface decoration is glazed with drawings and thoughts from a letter to Alma which reads, in French:

‘Dear Alma,

How are you? I imagine that you are sitting in the sunshine today, eyes half closed, nose raised slightly to the sky, sniffing something curious; a scented note from the land of the black stars perhaps.

How are your esteemed friends in Vallabrègues? Alma, I blow kisses from my terracotta hands!

Cou cou, I love you! See you soon,

Sophie 1690’

Offset handles are glazed in splashy strokes of arsenic green and a sort of dark plummy colour which were taken from book spines in the painting, Interior with the Artist’s Daughter, c.1935-6 by Vanessa Bell.

Additional Notes: These earthenware ceramics are fired at relatively low temperatures and are not vitrified, which means they are slightly more porous than stoneware or porcelain which are fired at higher temperatures. Occasionally, if the vessel contains liquid, moisture will form a bloom on the base. Please make sure you protect precious surfaces if you intend to display these works for long periods of time containing water, or use a water tight liner. To clean, wash gently in warm soapy water by hand. Not dishwasher safe.
