1690 Loving Cup

1690 Loving Cup
A giant, handbuilt terrocotta loving cup, decorated with white slip and slip-trailed colours. Meadow flowers in a sooty derby green are strewn over the surface and handles in a wind blown way, their centres picked out in oxtail brown. There is a small amount of joggling, or marbling on the inside rim to break the milky surface. Like so much English slipware of the 17th century, the cup bears the maker’s signature, 1690.
Approximate Dimensions: Height 20cm, diameter at widest point including handles 26cm, diameter at lip 23cm
Additional Notes: These earthenware ceramics are fired at relatively low temperatures and are not vitrified, which means they are slightly more porous than stoneware or porcelain. Occasionally, if the vessel contains liquid, moisture will form a bloom on the base. Please make sure you protect precious surfaces if you intend to display these works for long periods of time containing water. To clean, wash gently in warm soapy water by hand. Not dishwasher safe.
